Location - Bunyola

Bunyola, Mallorca

The municipality of Bunyola has a variety of pre-historic vestiges amongst which the most outstanding is the circular talaiot of Coma-sema, which has rooms attached and is one of the best conserved examples found in the mountains of Mallorca.

 


Geography

This municipality has a mountainous uneven geography with heights that pass 1.000 metres in the Sierra de Alfabia and and in the flatter part, in the boundaries of Palma, it doesn't exceed the 100 metres. Two of its outstanding features, geographically speaking, are the torrents of Coanegra and of Bunyola, which flow into the Torrente Gros, in the municipality of Palma.

Municipality

Within the municipality of Bunyola there can also be found the nucleus of Palmañola, Sa Font Seca and Orient, as well as the important properties of Raixa and Alfabia, very emblematic places as far as the culture, history and tradition of Majorca are concerned.

Outstanding Features

In the municipality the baroque church of Saint Mateu (XVIII century) stands out and has a Gothic image of Nuestra Señora de las Nieves (Mare de Déu de les Neus).

Views

In all of the municipality, thanks to its orography, there are some really spectacular views that could easily be on the front page of a magazine. Of these, the views that can be seen from Bunyola to Orient, above all when one is in the valley of Orient.

If you visit Bunyola you must not miss the opportunity to visit the properties of Raixa y Alfabia, authentic architectural jewels of Mallorca.

Economy

Bunyola has very few job opportunities, so in recent years it has become a place to live and sleep. The majority of its inhabitants work in the capital, Palma de Mallorca. 

Transport

The train to Soller. Since1912 this train has communicated Palma de Mallorca with Sóller, also passing through the municipality of Bunyola on its journey, it runs 27 kilometres to its final destination, travelling through the Serra de Tramuntana, with the most marvellous scenery on the way to be admired.

The coach (TIB): The bus number IB-30 of the company TIB (Transport of the Balearic Islands) communicates Palma with Bunyola, passing through Palmanyola and the Hospital Joan March. The bus takes just over half an hour to cover its route.

Golf Courses

The nearest golf course to Bunyola is that of Golf Son Termens.

Leisure and other Activities.

Of all the sports activities on offer in Bunyola the most interesting and outstanding come from the firm named Vida Sport, CB, whose aim is to promote adventure activities for children and youths in Binicanella and the Club Vol Lliure Mallorca, which is an association dedicated to the inspiring sport of hang-gliding.

Special Events

Beneïdes de Sant Antoni (the first Sunday in January after the day of Saint Anthony) with a parade with floats and horses, the children of the village and drummers walking along playing their drums.

Fiesta des Quarteró (the last Sunday of January), with food and dancing in a property belonging to the Town Hall.

Domingo de Ángel, with a Mass, a friendship meal and dancing in Alfàbia.

Santa Catalina Thomás (28th of July), parade with the float of the 'Beatita', concert, a free-for-all snack, food and dancing.

Fiestas parroquiales (parish festivities) de la Mare de Déu de les Neus (first week-end in August) with a Mass, concert with young players and a dance in the local square.

Fiestas Patronales de Sant Mateu (21st of September), with official announcement, a Mass, a tribute to the elderly, concerts and recitings, exhibitions, festival dances, theatre, market with the takings going to good causes, a supper-for-all, sport competitions, popular games, workshops, fun activities for children and youngsters, sample showings of different products and gatherings.

Vigilia de Santa Catalina (24th of November) with bonfires and dancing.

 Impressions

Bunyola is the archetypal of the locality right in the middle of the lovely Serra de Tramontana, in a place where the wild nature of the mountain allows man to live in harmony with it. Bunyola is a municipality with places like Orient, a little village with few houses, set in the heart of Mallorca and that of the Majorcan people.
