Borne, Mallorca

Outstanding Features

The Paseo del Borne is an emblematic street of  Palma de Mallorca which joins two areas, Plaza de las Tortugas (o Plaza Juan Carlos I) with the Plaza de la Reina, where the Lonja is situated. It was built over an old riverbed of the Torrente de la Riera, which once in olden days crossed the centre of the city. It consists of a central pedestrial passage with  two traffic lanes (one each side) one for each direction. There you can find the Casal Solleric, a former palace transformed into a place for exhibitions of works of art for the delight of the public. On arriving at the Plaza de la Reina, it then leads onto the Paseo Maritimo and in the Plaza de Juan Carlos I it meets up with the flow of traffic of the Avenue Jaime III on the left, which is one of the main commercial areas of Palma and with the street known as la calle Unión to the right, which in turn leads onto the Ramblas.

Aquatic Activities

The Bay of Palma constitutes the geographic feature that has had the most influence over the city not only because of the multiple touristic and industrial activities that take place there, but also for the sports activities that are possible. It is possible to do the majority of all water sports, especially that of sailing. In these types of sports, many Majorcan people that have competed in the World Championships and in the Olimpic Games have stood out. To practice these sports there are various sports clubs of which the most outstanding are the Real Club Náutico de Palma, Escuela de vela Calanova and Club Náutico de Portitxol, amongst others.

Golf Courses

To practice this sport, a lot of self-discipline is needed and the Club de Golf Son Vida and Son Gual are excellent in this field, not only for the high quality of their installations but also for the wide range of the services that they offer.

Impressions

To say ‘Borne’ in Palma de Mallorca is to mention a very special street of enormous vintage and a well-known and wide commercial tradition. Many important firms have opened their shops in the Borne. Its style is similar to the type of structure of the ‘Rambla’ in Barcelona which means an obligatory place to visit for those who visit Palma or those who decide to go shopping in the capital of the Balearic Islands.
