Outstanding Features
Santa Ponsa is considered to be one of the tourist zones of most importance of Mallorca, due to the great quantity of distinct touristic zones within its municipality. Its range of tourism covers from the basic sun and beach to the highest standard. Its number of inhabitants is 10.736. Santa Ponsa is the most densely populated area of the municipality. There is a beach which measures half a kilometre in length and another beach of 30 metres in length named caló d'en Pellicer, a sports club and a 100 or so hotels, apartments, shops, bars, nightclubs and restaurants.
It has two historic parts, Calvià Vila and Es Capdellà, there are also some residences of patrimonial interest, some of which are Can Verger, Can Ros and Es Pontet.
The main office of the Town Hall is in the middle of the town. It was inaugurated in the year 1989 and was a project by the architects Rafael Balaguer and Jaime Vidal, who opted for elements of the modern constructive techniques combined with traditional Mallorcan ones such as the roof tiles 'teja', the 'marés' a whitish large brick and broken stones, with the idea in mind of creating a very modern vanguard building but at the same time, a very functional practical one.
Santa Ponsa has a special significance in the history of Mallorca as in the year 1229, Jaime I of Aragón conducted the Christian conquest of Mallorca from this locality, spreading his language and culture which are still in vigour today all over the island. In the year 1929 a cross was put up in commemoration of the seven hundredth anniversary of the reconquest. The base of this cross has several representations of different scenes of this reconquest. It is to be found on one of the extremes of the Bay of Santa Ponsa.
Golf Courses
The installations of the Golf Santa Ponsa I, Golf Santa Ponsa II, Golf Santa Ponsa III, Real Golf de Bendinat and Club de Golf de Poniente are ideal for playing this noble sport and are to be found in the municipality of Calvià.
Aquatic Activities
In the municipality of Calvià there are five sports port clubs: Portals Nous, Portals vells, Palmanova, Puerto Portals and Port Adriano. All having the best possible installations and services for practising any of the water sports.
