Geography
Santa Maria del Camí does not have any geographical accidents of importance, its lands are mainly flat lands. The municipality has certain zones near the Tramontana Mountain Range such as the torrent of Coanegra which has extreme beauty.
Places of interest
The valley of Coanegra
This valley is one of the most spectacular places in Mallorca thanks to the avenc de Son Pou, an impressive natural hollow.
The convent of the Mínimos
It is a pure necessity to visit and admire the Cloister and the Convent of the Mínimos, built in the XVII century by Lluc Mesquida. The Cloister is a place for rest, where you can admire and appreciate the stone walls, the columns, and a cross which came from Alaró.
The Sunday Market
In the grand square of the Plaça Nova, every Sunday a popular market is held being the liveliest moment of the week in Santa Maria. It is the ideal moment to buy products from Mallorca or just to enjoy the ambience in bars and cafés and to watch the strolling parade go by.
Economy
The majority of people who live in Santa Maria del Camí commute to another place for work and many of its residents, who work in the capital, have chosen this town to live for this reason, as it is very pretty and not far from Palma and other towns where there are job opportunities. The art of making wine or enology is important in Santa María, thanks to the presence of important wine cellars such as Bodegues Macià Batle, Celler Sebastià Pastor, Celler Ramanyà and Jaume de Puntiró.
Transport
Santa Maria del Camí is a municipality very well communicated by road with Palma thanks to the motorway which runs through the centre of the island. As well as the motorway, Santa Maria del Camí has a train station which goes to Artá and Palma. There is also a bus station which connects the town with the rest of the towns in Mallorca.
Golf Courses
The nearest golf courses for playing and enjoying the noble sport of golf and which have excellent installations are Golf de Son Termens and the Golf Park Puntiró.
Special dates and events
The fair is the last Sunday in April. The next day the firó takes place. In Santa María, bonfires are built on the eve of Saint Antonio (17th of January). The festivities for the patron saints are on the 20th of July, for Saint Margarita. Cultural, musical activities and popular games are held. The games consist in a competition amongst a variety of young groups in a very party type ambience. During the Festa del vi novell, the last Saturday in November, the wine cellars give a bottle of wine to the Town Hall and the Mayoress gives them a branch of a pine tree to hang over the entrance door of the wine cellar.
Impressions
Santa Maria del Camí is like a crossroads in the centre of Mallorca. If we are in the south, we have to cross through it to get to many parts of the centre, the north and vice versa. The surroundings which it has in the heart of the Tramontana Mountain Range and the torrent of Coanegra, one of the most beautiful enclaves of Mallorca, are almost magical, without underrating in any way the exquisite taste of the wine in its typical taverns or Cellers.
