Mallorca is not one of Spain's most celebrated wine regions. However, it has a great tradition and a good repertoire of wineries and wine. Taking into account La Rioja, D.O. Priorat and D.O. Ribera del Duero the competition is fierce, but if one takes into account the island's climatic situation (3,000 hours of sunshine a year), its geology (limestone and clays that give a slightly alkaline acidity and great drainage) and its proximity to the sea, it is possible to affirm that Mallorca's artisanal wineries are excellent candidates for any wine lover.

With more than 70 wineries in Mallorca, many of which open their doors to visitors, there is no shortage of vineyards to visit. And autumn is undoubtedly one of the best times of the year to take a winery tour, as the vines are still lush green and vibrant and it is possible to witness the grape harvest.

The origin of Mallorca's great winemaking tradition dates back to 123 B.C., when the island became part of the Roman Empire. Wine was beginning to be exported in a big way and wine production in Mallorca grew considerably.

Unfortunately, at the end of the 19th century, phylloxera, a small insect, destroyed almost all the vineyards in Mallorca and it took no less than a hundred years for the island to recover its pre-disaster production level.

Thanks to the increase in tourism, farmers started growing vines in Mallorca again and today we are proud to have some of the best wines in Europe. In addition, most of the wineries are open for visits and wine tasting.

A tour around the best wineries of Mallorca

Son Vives Winery

In a privileged area of the coast of Mallorca, framed between the Mediterranean and the Tramontana mountain range, is located this wonderful winery that began operating in 1986. Bodega Son Vives was created with the sole purpose of reviving the Malvasia de Banyalbufar, an ancient grape variety present in this land since at least the 16th century.

The owners know very well how to take advantage of the stunning sea views of the winery, which has panoramic terraces from which it is possible to taste this very special grape.

In addition to private guided tours and wine tastings, there is also a 'Sunset Tasting' every Friday and Saturday during the summer. Ribas Winery

Bodega Ribas is located in Consell, in the heart of the island. This family estate has been producing wine for more than 300 years and is known as one of the oldest wineries in Mallorca. Its more than 40 hectares of vineyards boast an admirable range of grape varieties, including Mantonegro and Prensal, but also Gargollasa, which was practically extinct before being revived by the Ribas family. The Gargollasa is the golden goose of the more conventional varieties and allows the creation of very special blends.

In addition, this winery offers many options, from a one-hour winery tour and wine tasting (€18) to a full four-hour gourmet experience for only €81. They also host many concerts and other events in the summer, so check their website regularly for updates.

Son Puig Winery

These wineries date back to 1597 and are still going strong, an irrefutable proof of their quality. Bodegas Son Puig exclusively produces only a limited number of bottles per year, with grapes harvested on their land. Varieties include the local Prensal & Callet, as well as Chardonnay, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Tempranillo.
