THE 43RD COPA DEL REY MAPFRE: SAILING, STYLE AND ROYAL COMPETITION

From July 26 to August 2, 2025, the Bay of Palma will host the 43rd edition of the prestigious Copa del Rey MAPFRE, organized by the Real Club Náutico de Palma. More than just a regatta, this event blends elite competition with Mediterranean lifestyle and nautical tradition. This year, the event will be held in conjunction with the ORC European Championship, combining two major international sailing events in one. The result is an unparalleled week of sailing, culture and exclusivity that attracts top sailors, luxury brands and nautical enthusiasts from around the world.

Record-breaking participation from around the globe
The 2025 edition has already surpassed 100 registered boats and is expected to host up to 120 yachts from 14 to 23 different countries. The regatta includes four ORC classes for cruisers, Swan One Designs, and the increasingly popular Women's Cup. This variety ensures a technical and visual spectacle on the water, attracting both professional teams and private owners. The event has become a magnet for sponsors and media, reinforcing its status as one of the most important regattas in Europe.

The rise of the Women's Cup in competitive sailing
One of the highlights of this year’s edition is the Women’s Cup, featuring 14 all-female teams from Spain and a crew from Brazil. Notable participants include Balearia (María Bover), Dorsia (Nuria Sánchez), and Tantive IV. Clubs like RCNPP and CMSAP will also be represented, alongside a historic first-time military women’s team from the Spanish Navy. This reflects the growing presence of women in competitive sailing and the increasing institutional support for gender equality in sport.

Spanish Navy and Royal Family at the helm
The Spanish Navy will compete with four boats, including the TP52 “Aifos”, skippered by King Felipe VI himself. There is also speculation about Princess Leonor's participation as part of her naval training. The presence of the Royal Family adds a ceremonial and symbolic touch, reinforcing the connection between sailing, national identity and institutional prestige. It also draws international attention to the event and highlights Spain’s strong nautical culture.

Demanding schedule for elite sailors
The official program begins on July 26 with an opening ceremony and ribbon cutting. July 27 is dedicated to free training. From July 29 to August 2, the official regattas of the ORC European Championship will take place, featuring a mix of coastal races (1–1.5 hours) and long offshore stages of up to 12 hours. This format challenges the endurance and tactical skill of all crews. The event also includes social gatherings, business networking and luxury experiences, reinforcing its reputation as a global benchmark in competitive sailing.
