What to eat near to your property in Mallorca

As anyone with a good palate knows, Spanish cuisine is, if not the best, or one of the best in the world and we can proudly say that Mallorca’s cuisine is no different. Mallorca, as with most places, is a destination where its gastronomy is adapted to the season. Summer has its own signature characteristics: the heat and seasonal products. Mallorca’s dishes in summer are dressed in bright colours and intense flavours. The red tones of the tomatoes and peppers, the blue of the aubergine accompanied by the flavours of vegetables, meats, garlic and olive oil. With so much variety, our team at Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Nova Mallorca Real Estate have made a selection of what we consider our favourites.

The "tumbet" is undoubtedly a star dish in summer. It is made with aubergine, courgette, red or green peppers, potatoes, tomatoes, tomato sauce, garlic, oil and salt. All fried, normally with meat and maybe even fish. To top the dish, a fried egg is usually added.

The "trempó", a typical cold salad from Mallorca, is eaten during any point of the day. It is made with tomato, pepper and onion, all seasoned with virgin olive oil and salt. You can prepare it with smoked herring, tuna or even apricots. It is the summer dish that the farming traditions have gifted to Mallorca. It’s extremely simple and delicious, perfect for occasions like the beach, a boat trip or an excursion.

Coca de Trempó” is a must try in Mallorca. It consists of a flat and square bread dough, with vegetables cut into pieces. Like the Trempó, it has tomato, green and red peppers and onion.

Roasted aubergines” are a more elaborate dish. They are stuffed with minced meat or fish and seafood, and they are covered with a tomato sauce and breadcrumbs. Although they are more difficult, they are worth the attempt, they will instantly make your mouth water.

Typical desserts from the island, near to your property in Mallorca

Mallorca’s cuisine is simple but very tasty. For hundreds of years it has been based on what the earth produces. Mallorca's desserts follow the simple methods and techniques of their fellow savoury dishes. Here are some examples.

The Mallorcan “ensaimada” is the queen of desserts and the most well-known. Although it may not seem like it, it is cooked using lard and eaten stuffed with pumpkin, cream, or without a filling and with powdered sugar placed on top. It has a very characteristic spiral shape that makes it internationally recognizable.

Crespells” are a doughy treat from Mallorca composed mainly of butter, eggs and sugar. They are usually enjoyed during the Easter holidays and can be found throughout the year in Mallorca's bakeries and cake shops, mostly in the shape of a fun star.

As the Spanish saying goes “Bread with bread is the food of fools” then the ‘gató’ almond cake perfectly meets that criteria. Almonds are harvested from the centre of Mallorca which are of great importance to the island’s inhabitants. With them a sweet cake is made, covered with sugar, -El Gató- is traditionally eaten with ice cream made from this nut. Much like the ensaimada, it is also one of the most famous desserts from Mallorca and is still cooked in many houses, both the ice cream and the cake are always handmade.
