Palma´s old quarter.

Sometimes we plan too much and seem to forget how beautiful and entertaining a simple walk around the old quarter of Palma can be. The old quarter is the most interesting part of the centre and where one can find most of Palma´s monuments. It has a medieval layout with narrow streets full of special places and things to see. One can still find some remains of the city wall that was built in the renaissance period and that was knocked down at the beginning of the twentieth century.



Some of the important monuments are the Almudaina Palace and the cathedral of La Seu which reflect their architecture on the waters of the lake of Parc de la Mar. In the past the sea used to reach up to the wall however there is now a park were the water used to be. A park that attracts visitors and locals that enjoy relaxing walks along that area. Within the park one can find various works of art including the ceramic mural by Joan Miró. At the foot of the cathedral (definitely worth visiting) we find SesVoltes (The Vaults) a central courtyard surrounded by walls. It has been used for various purposes and now serves as an open air theatre and an exhibition centre. It now hosts a permanent collection of Majorcan paintings from the 19th and 20th centuries, with works by Joan O´Neille, AntoniRibas, Joan Bauçà, RicardAnckermann, AntoniGelabert, Santiago Rusiñol, HermenegildAngladaCamarassa, and many more artists.



Other things to see are the Palau Episcopal (Episcopal Palace), the Oratory ofSant Pau, the Hospital of Sant Pere andSantBernat, thePorta de l´Almudaina and many other secrets that you will have to observe and discover yourself.
