How to maintain your pool in winter

There is no doubt that having a pool at home during the summer is a pleasure but when the summer ends you have to know what to do in order to keep it in the best condition to enjoy it the following summer.

Winter is a long season and if it doesn't hold up well, it can be very difficult to get it ready when you wish to dive in. Follow Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Nova Mallorca's advice to take care of your pool properly, saving you work when you use it the following season.

Good practices for the maintenance of your pool

One common mistake that a lot of people make is emptying the pool. It´s true that this way the water will not get dirty and it could avoid some problems but rest assured that it takes a lot more work than keeping the water. We have to bear in mind that the structure of a pool is built to be full at all times and without the pressure exerted by the water in the container it can end up deteriorating itself.

Two things have to be done in order to keep the water in the right conditions during winter: purify the water with a purifier (eight hours every seven days more or less) and perform a superchlorination, which will kill any living organism that may reside in the water. You also have to be aware of the chlorine level in your pool, this should be around 3 p.p.m. at all times.

If you do not have a pool cleaner, we recommend that you get one to treat the water during the winter, since it is highly effective and easy to use. You have to mix it with a bucket of water to dilute it a bit and spread it over the surface (approximately 3-5 L / 50m3). Don't forget to have the treatment device running during the process, and if there is bad weather it is recommended to repeat this process in February.

Follow our advice and prepare your pool for winter

Although the pool, by carrying out these measures, is maintained quite well, you must watch the pool so that algae does not appear or that the water does not turn muddy. The PH has to be between 7.2 and 7.6. You have to keep it clean and collect all the debris that could get it dirty or worsen the maintenance of the pool (insects, leaves,) while nobody is using it.

Finally, it is always a good idea to cover it with some type of sailcloth. This will prevent it from being filled with insects or leaves that may fall and will prevent possible accidents.

We hope that these tips have been useful to you and that next summer you can enjoy your pool in the best conditions.
