Fair of San Francesc in Muro
This
festivity is carried out on the first Sunday after the Easter week and is one of the best known traditional and agricultural fairs in Majorca.
Muro is a municipality which enjoys covering part of the National Park of "S´Albufera." That is why it is a very common tourist attraction especially amongst the ornithologists, as the variety of birds is immense.
The festivity that Muro offers honors San Francisco de Paula and is a religious celebration, very important for many locals of
Majorca. It began in 1714, however the origin of the festivity dates back to earlier in time. The activities carried out during that Sunday are both religious and civic as it is important to entertain the visitors.
For the religious people, the Church of Muro offers a special mass that many say is spectacular. The town is decorated with branches, limbs and flowers giving it the spring atmosphere everyone is looking for. A curious activity that takes place closer to the afternoon consists of grabbing a rabbit from the top of a long, smooth greasy pole. A spectacular show, very entertaining for the visitors and tourists. Various types of outstanding fireworks put an end to the night accompanied by typical music and dances like the "jotes" and "boleros" that take place in the shade of the church.
For many this event is the best way to get to taste and buy some of the typical delicacies and dishes of Majorca which are offered in different stalls along the roads. Not only food and beverages but also pottery, jewelry, machinery, etc½
