The evolution of the kitchen throughout history

The kitchen has been, most likely, our home space that has undergone most transformations over the years.

Although it has always been an important space in our lives, the way of living it has changed a lot. Let's jump into the 20th century, a time characterized by the emergence of the Bauhaus, a pioneering art and architecture school during the modern movement in Germany. Its arrival brought a series of technological and artistic advances that redesigned the modern kitchen.

From that moment on, it started to evolve in the field of functionality; utensils, extractors and other items acquired a great role in our homes thanks to their ability to facilitate daily tasks.

However, with the advent of television, the living room became the most important one, and the kitchen took a back seat with no social role, becoming a fully functional space.

At that time, there was no progress on an aesthetic level and the kitchens used to appear attached to the walls, in an “L” shape, closed to the house with the mere objective of being used exclusively for cooking in groups or alone.

At Berkshire Hathaway HomeServices Nova Mallorca, your real estate agency in Mallorca, we are aware that the kitchen has undergone important changes over time and that it is currently considered one of the most valuable rooms in any home.

The kitchen has become a social space

Today, the kitchen has a very relevant social role in our home and has become a much more familiar space. Proof of this are the kitchen islands designs, which make up the front cooking space, considering that preparing dishes is an activity that is done and enjoyed in good company.

The contemporary kitchen looks for making a difference in the aesthetics and returns to being the heart of the home. Through technological advances, new durable materials appear and we obtain kitchens that seek comfort and well-being.

On the other hand, the evolution of the fume extractor has made possible for the kitchen to be more open to other spaces, specially by getting rid of bad odours, grease and smokes,  being part of the unified space of the house.

What is the kitchen like today?

What is sought is a spacious kitchen with plenty of natural light that blends seamlessly into the house. It is essential to place the furniture in a perimeter way in order to open the centre space, where we can place the kitchen island. There is also the possibility of freeing up space by using folding furniture or tables attached to the designs and paintings on  the walls in white or light tones such as ecru or pastel colours.

In addition, it is important that the decoration is tailored, which means that each of the elements fits perfectly in the space intended for the appliances. Also, having the supplies organized will help us to achieve a better space. An excellent solution for the countertop to be clear is to install a bar where the containers and other utensils can be placed. Rotating trays are another great resource, especially those that are equipped with a vertical bar to which trays are attached.

At Nova Inmobiliaria we are committed to make the kitchen a fundamental social space in our homes. In addition, we assure you that the more spacious and pleasant the kitchen is, the more delicious your dishes will be.
