Double rosette in Palma cathedral

The Palma de Majorca Cathedral or 'La Seu', as it is known, is the jewel in the crown of Majorcan architecture. Apart from being one of the most famous Gothic buildings in Europe, it represents Majorca and is a symbol of the whole of the Balearic archipelago. It is considered one of the most magnificent buildings ever built and encompasses almost all artistic styles since the Middle Ages. It is one of the most visited cathedrals in Spain and one of the main tourist attractions. Each year at Christmas, a phenomenon of unique beauty in the Cathedral of Palma de Mallorca (Spain) occurs.

The first rays of the day go by one of the rosettes, cross the perfect cathedral and influence over the other, on the opposite side, which projects into the street the beautiful colors of stained glass fashion. This unique and poignant phenomenon does not occur by chance, but by mathematical laws capable of transferring the magic light from inside the house to the outside.

However, not just the magical effect of the sun and the beautiful stained glass light in the cathedral. In the symmetrical dates on November 11 (11/11) and February 2 (2/2), inside the temple, the biggest rose window is projected on the opposite wall, just below the other, and forms a double Rosette, known as "eight".  The numerical symbolism "eight" symbolizes the union of the earthly and the spiritual. You can visit the cathedral those days to have a look at the phenomenon yourself!

The large rose window of the cathedral of Palma de Majorca is known as "the eye of the Gothic", measures 13.8 meters in diameter, contains 24 equilateral triangles and 1,236 pieces of glass, making it the largest Gothic Rosette in the world. It is also a sundial that marks the hours and seasons.
