Palma inaugurates the festivities with the Christmas lighting.
Majorca's festivities begin, as in previous years, with the lighting of the streets of Palma. Last Friday the major of Palma,
Mateo Isern inaugurated Christmas with the traditional lighting of the city accompanied by the voices of the children's choir. He stated that the event was always very emotive and that it was a pleasure for him to take part in it. It was not only a pleasure for him, but also for the people that assisted who enjoyed the lighting as much as he did.
This year the Christmas lighting has a special surprise as it include a
10 meter high Christmas tree situated in the
PaseoSagrera next to the statue of Ramón Llull. This is a perfect location as it is a popular area for visitors and tourists and as it can be seen from various points of the PaseoMaritimo. The innovations don't end there! Palma will also count on two new signs with Bienvenida (welcome) and FelizNavidad (Merry Christmas) written on them at the beginning of the Paseo.
In total 95 streets will be lit from the 28
th of November to the 6
th of January. All of the lights used will be energy-saving lights and most of the material will be reused from previous years. This means that the costs will be reduced an 85% in comparison to the year 2006.
A spectacular Christmas Nativity Scene will be set up in Cort, and it will represent different corners and parts of Palma. For the first time, it will be made by
MargalidaNicolás with the artistic direction of
Catalina Rullán. It will consist of 170 pieces located in 16 square meters.
