Coming Saturday, the 1
st of March, will see the 31
st edition of the traditional Balearic Day, however, the celebrations will already begin on Thursday with a local artisans market and the booths of the "Casas Regionales", which offer culinary specialities from all over Spain as well as from the Balearics in the area between Plaça Drassana, Sa Feixina and Paseo Mallorca. In addition, there will be presentations by falconers as well as traditional dancing groups and numerous museums and emblematic buildings will be open to the public.
Beginning on Friday, the Parc de la Mar will see a great variety of sports attractions, including Aqua Surf, a large-scale Scalextric and a Red Bull Formula 1 simulator on Sunday. On Friday night, on the Paseo del Borne there will be concerts starting at 7.30 pm, while on Saturday night, the Correfoc by the Dimonis of Sóller will illuminate the city in a devilish atmosphere. Plaça Rei Joan Carles, commonly known as the Turtles' Square, will be the location for a concert by popular singer Biel Duran (9.30 pm).
This year's edition of the Balearic Day will be used by the Balearic government as a tool to boost winter tourism and to promote Balearic produce and gastronomy both to the domestic as to the international market, says Antonio Gomez, vice-president of the Balearic government. In spite of the restricted budget, Gomez is convinced the city has organised a programme for everybody to enjoy.
